Culture Entanglement

Culture Observatory

Watching culture as it changes

Culture is never static.

Ideas emerge, travel across borders, encounter other traditions, and transform along the way.

The Culture Observatory explores these movements and emerging practices. We do not just observe culture; we trace how ideas move, transform, and become part of everyday life.

From emergence to entanglement

Cultural change unfolds through relationships. We follow ideas from their first signals to the meanings they take on in everyday life.

From Quantum Entanglement to Cultural Entanglement

“Spooky action at a distance”

“Spukhafte Fernwirkung”
Albert Einstein, 1947

Einstein used this expression to describe his unease with implications of quantum mechanics, particularly the apparent connections between phenomena separated by distance.

At Culture Entanglement, we borrow this image metaphorically, not scientifically.

Cultures, like ideas, are rarely isolated. Ideas, practices, symbols and ways of making meaning travel between people and places. In new contexts, they transform, acquire new meanings and carry traces of previous journeys.

This is what we call cultural entanglement.

We are interested in the connections that emerge when cultures meet, and in what happens to ideas as they move, adapt and become part of new cultural contexts.

  1. Distance
  2. Connection
  3. Encounter
  4. Transformation

From quantum entanglement to cultural entanglement: from connections across distance to connections across cultures.

The Culture Observatory traces these journeys, making visible the relationships, transformations and unexpected connections through which culture changes.

From Observation to Understanding

The Observatory is not designed simply to collect trends.

We look for connections.

  • An emerging practice may reveal a deeper change in values.
  • A change in language may signal a change in identity.
  • A trend in one community may become a global phenomenon.
  • An idea that appears universal may have very different meanings across cultures.

Our aim is to make these cultural connections visible.

Observation and research, in conversation

Culture Observatory

The Observatory follows emerging cultural phenomena, traces how they travel, and makes patterns of change visible.

From observation to investigation

Our Labs conduct research, develop projects, and explore cultural questions in depth.
